Tim Hardin
Recordings |

|
Below are the albums I own or know about from
assorted sources. Some are still available in vinyl or CD format,
although access to them will depend on the country you are trying to
buy them in. Sadly, although Verve/Polydor has re-released their
catalogue on CD, CBS (now Sony) has been a bit slower in bringing
out old material by less well known artists, so the best way to get
hold of later material by Tim Hardin may be through second hand
shops or record fairs. Browse through this section for a track or
album you want, then take a look at the
Record
Sellers/Values page for details of some links to Internet record
sellers - new and second-hand. I have broken down the listings
into sections: Original Studio Recordings, Live
Albums, Compilations, Video/DVD, Other Formats.

Produced by Don & Caroline

This final album was recorded shortly before
Tim's death and only a few
tracks were completed. It is obvious from the sound quality that some
tracks were recorded at home - the piano is not properly miked up - and
more work ought to have been done before release. However, it shows the
route that Tim was taking and the desire to get back into the public
eye.
The title track was subsequently recorded by Joe Cocker and released
as a single. Although the album has never made it to CD (and probably
never will), the title track is available on the Polydor compilation CD
Black Sheep Boy. Tracks have also made it onto the various artists CDs
The San Francisco Sound: Then & Now, Vols 1 & 2.

Production details:
So far
as I can establish, this double CD is issued by a label known
for their bootleg CDs. It is therefore not a legally recognised
issue. I have included the details here, purely to provide
completion. My thanks to Dave Cliffe of Rochdale for the
information.
Tracks
1-15 of CD1 are from a radio show WTBS-FM, Boston MA.
January,1963, while 16-23 are, according to the CD cover, from
the Centre For Performing Arts Homecoming Concert, Oregon
January 17, 1980. I'm not so sure about that and think they may
have been lifted from the video interview that was made at the
same time as the concert.
CD2:
1-16 The Troubadour, Los Angeles, CA February 2, 1970; 17-18
Whiskey A Go Go. Los Angeles, June 5, 1979.

The material for Tim Hardin
1 was recorded in July 1966 and for Tim Hardin 2 in April 1967. Chronologically, much of
the material on Tim Hardin 4 was demo material recorded in May 1964
around the same time as the material that ended up on This Is Tim
Hardin. He was unhappy when Verve released this "inferior" material in
1969. The balance of this material has now been released on Through the
Years.

The
Best of Tim Hardin a.k.a. Archetypes
Released in 1971 on
Verve-Forecast FTS 3078 - vinyl only.
Renamed Archetypes in 1974, it was reissued on MGM (M3F-4952)
with a different cover.
Track listing:

Dream

Reason to Believe
Black Sheep Boy
Red Balloon
Smugglin' Man
Lady Came From Baltimore
11 tracks
A Best of album put out by
Verve after Tim moved to Columbia. It features tracks from the first two
albums. The running time was less than half an hour, suggesting that
this was designed to take away the impact from the release of a studio
album - possibly Bird on a Wire.

Album released shortly
after Tim's death, whether as a genuine memorial to his work or as a
quick cash-in on the publicity surrounding his demise. Ironically, the
liner notes express regret that his passing was overshadowed by the
murder of John Lennon and the album probably didn't get the sales that
it might have done.

What a nerve! The album
cover claims rare & unreleased studio recordings, but all of these songs
have been available on the Hang On to a Dream CD since 1994.
The CD cover has a photo of
Tim at Woodstock in 1969, but these appear to be the tracks recorded in
the Columbia studios in 1964 that were rejected when Tim Hardin 4 and
This is Tim Hardin were compiled.
Now being marketed (more honestly) as Through The Years 1964-66.

Reason to Believe - The Interview; How Can We Hang On to a Dream - The Songs
Released 2000
by Americam, Seattle
This video was recorded 11
months before Tim's death. It consists of an interview by Phil Freeman,
with some songs interspersed, then a performance of 8 songs recorded in
a rehearsal studio in preparation for his Homecoming Concert.
Although broadcast quality
video equipment may have been used, there was only a single camera
and so the whole thing is very static.
After the fascinating
Hardin interview, Freeman talks to Don Rubin, who produced several
albums, including The Unforgiven. Rubin tends to offer a different
interpretation of events.
I understand that the video can be bought by contacting AmeriCAM, 814 - 31 Avenue South, Seattle,
WA 98144. If this is no longer the case, contact me and I'll try to
put you in touch with Phil Freeman to see if he can help.

Woodstock Diaries
Released on DVD 2002 by Direct Video Distribution DVDSV3001D
Tim's performance of
If I Were a Carpenter is captured from his 30
minute Woodstock set. This is a unique chance to see Tim, who was not
seen in the original edit of the movie, although he is caught walking
through the crowd (but not performing) in the Director's Cut version.
The DVD also has 30 performances by a whole range of people who
appeared at Woodstock.

Singles
This is a chronological list of the singles that I know of that have
been released over the years. I don't own all of them (I wish!) but I
have some and I've seen the others on sale on Gemm and other sellers.
If you are looking to build a collection of singles, Gemm is probably
the place to start, but beware: some sellers are asking exorbitant
prices (see Values).
